Race implications for Alzheimer’s Patients.

It’s unfortunate but illness does not affect cultures equally. Different cultures are more susceptible to certain conditions and sadly, awareness of these trends is not always common. Alzheimer’s Disease is one such condition where specific cultures need to pay attention so they can take control of their health and begin early screening.

An advertising campaign has recently begun in the United States to try to break down cultural barriers in Alzheimer’s detection and treatment. This campaign specifically targets people at risk for developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. The message is being sent out in both English and Spanish and focuses on the Black, Hispanic, Asian-American, and other ethnic and racial minority populations. The material also focuses on the physicians that service these populations.

The hope of this advertising campaign is to help people understand the risk factors and educate the physicians on how to identify the patients who are at risk for developing Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The trend in these populations is that more and more people of diverse ethnic origins are at high risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementia classes. Contributing to their susceptibility are triggering diseases such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

Additionally, the demographics of these populations are similar to the demographics of most countries. The population is aging. So, in these communities there are more and more people aged between 60-80 years old which is when dementia or Alzheimer’s usually occurs.

Education of the populations is an important step as is education of the physicians that serve them. Education of the physicians means they are up-to-date on the most appropriate treatments available and will administer them appropriately.
